Pharmacists

Pharmacy.gif Pharmacy at Auckland District Health Board (ADHB) is entering an exciting and challenging phase. The rationalisation of services between Auckland City Hospital and Greenlane Clinical Centre has enabled new opportunities for the provision of pharmacy services, ensuring that pharmacy contributes to ADHB’s commitment to improving the health of Aucklanders.  The department is at the forefront of the Board’s drive to provide safe, effective and cost-effective medications for their patients.

ADHB provides a wide range of specialities commensurate with its position as the largest tertiary hospital in New Zealand and this is reflected in the range experience that pharmacy staff can expect to gain.  The Pharmacy Department provides excellent induction and training programmes to support pharmacy staff in meeting the challenges associated with their roles.

Pharmacists
Clinical pharmacy services are well established.  Excellent relationships exist with medical and nursing staff, and most pharmacists attend ward rounds or multidisciplinary team meetings.  Junior staff have the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of clinical specialities, dispensary, medicines information, and cytotoxic services before specialising in an area of their particular interest.  Auckland University School of Pharmacy is located adjacent to Auckland City Hospital and joint research and teaching opportunities are available for those who are interested. Presentation at conferences and workshop participation are encouraged.

Pharmacists wishing to working at ADHB must be eligible for registration with the New Zealand Pharmacy Council.  From 2006, New Zealand pharmacists will need to provide proof of continuing professional development and ADHB is committed to assisting staff in this process.
